If you are arrested or asked to attend an interview

  • Ask for a solicitor. GOV.UK says you have the right to free legal advice at the police station. You can ask for the duty solicitor, available 24 hours a day and independent of the police, or name a firm, such as one from the list above.
  • You may be offered advice by phone instead of in person if you are suspected of a less serious offence, according to GOV.UK.
  • Talk to your solicitor before the interview. They can explain the allegation and advise whether to answer questions.

What a criminal defence solicitor does

  • advises and represents you at the police station;
  • deals with bail and charging decisions;
  • prepares your defence and represents you in the magistrates’ court;
  • instructs a barrister, or represents you directly, in the Crown Court;
  • advises on sentence and on any appeal.

Choosing a criminal solicitor in Coventry

  • Ask whether they cover Coventry police stations and courts and offer out-of-hours advice.
  • Ask about legal aid. Many criminal firms do legal aid work; ask whether this firm does and whether you are likely to qualify.
  • For private fees, ask for a written estimate. For motoring offences dealt with at a single hearing, SRA-regulated firms must publish prices.

Common questions

Is legal advice at the police station free?
Yes. GOV.UK says you have the right to free legal advice (legal aid) if you are questioned at a police station. You can ask for the duty solicitor, who is independent of the police, or ask the police to contact a solicitor of your choice.
Should I have a solicitor for a police interview?
It is your right, it is free, and what you say in interview can be used in court. Asking for a solicitor does not suggest you are guilty.
Can I get legal aid for court?
Possibly. Legal aid for representation in court depends on your case and, in most cases, your finances. A criminal solicitor can check this for you. See GOV.UK — legal aid for criminal cases.
What about motoring offences?
Many criminal firms handle driving offences such as speeding or careless driving. SRA-regulated firms must publish prices for summary-only road traffic offences dealt with at a single magistrates’ court hearing.
